Common conditions related to hip pain

Hip pain does not always originate in the same place. It can come from the joint, tendons, the side of the hip, or a degenerative process. That is why diagnosis is key before deciding on treatment.

It often causes pain on the side of the hip, especially when walking, climbing stairs, sleeping on one's side, or applying pressure to the area. It may be related to inflammation of tendinous or bursal structures.

It is a progressive wear and tear of the hip joint. It can cause groin pain, stiffness, loss of mobility and difficulty walking, climbing stairs or performing everyday movements.

Injuries or strains to the hip tendons can cause lateral pain, discomfort when getting up, difficulty walking or limitations when performing physical activity.

When the pain originates from the joint, it is usually felt in the groin, increases with movement and progressively limits hip mobility.

Common symptoms and causes of hip pain

Hip pain can appear in different areas and limit different movements depending on its origin. Here are some common symptoms and causes.

Groin pain

When the pain is located in the groin and increases when walking, rotating the leg or moving the hip, it may be related to a joint problem such as coxarthrosis.

Lateral hip pain

If pain appears in the outer area of the hip or travels down to the thigh, it may be related to trochanteric bursitis, tendinopathies or inflammation of periarticular tissues.

Difficulty walking

Pain can alter gait, cause a limp or make walking normal distances increasingly uncomfortable.

Stiffness or loss of mobility

In degenerative conditions, the hip can progressively lose mobility and make everyday movements such as climbing stairs, bending down, getting dressed or putting on socks difficult.

Pain when sleeping on your side

Pain when resting the hip on the bed can occur in cases of trochanteritis or irritation of the lateral hip area.

Prospective study carried out in 42 patients with hip osteoarthritis treated by means of a single intra-articular infiltration of autologous stromal vascular fraction obtained from adipose tissue. During the six-month follow-up, significant improvements were observed in the scales used to assess function, symptoms and pain. Patients with less advanced osteoarthritis showed better clinical results, whereas imaging tests showed no significant changes in the articular cartilage.
